How many grams of alcohol are there in wine?
The amount of alcohol in alcoholic drinks varies from beverage to beverage. By law, the amount of alcohol (ethanol) by volume (% apv) should be clearly indicated on the label of alcoholic drinks.
To calculate the number of alcoholic units of a beverage, you must know the number of grams of alcohol contained in the alcoholic drinks and how to translate % apv in terms of grams of alcohol.
To convert volume (e.g., ml) by mass (e.g., g) and vice-versa it is necessary to know the density. The density of alcohol: d 0.8 g/ml.
Therefore: a wine of 12.5% vol contains 12.5 ml of alcohol/100 ml of wine x 0.8 g/ml = 10g of alcohol/100ml of wine.
And the equivalent alcoholic unit (= 10g)
(A unit of alcohol can vary between 8 and 14g of alcohol, depending on the country).
In this way, it is easy to measure the number of units that we consume.
For example, 125ml of wine (12.5% vol.) equates to 1.25 alcoholic units and 175ml of wine (12.5% vol.) translates into 1.75 units of alcohol.
